I returned home and tried to settle to some chores, but by lunchtime I grew too bored to continue. I went out into the garden and let myself into the orangery. Lady Hardcastle was hard at work.
âWhat ho, Flo dear,â she said, looking up from the table. âHowâs Daisy?â
âVery well indeed,â I said. âShe was putting up a poster for a séance at the pub.â
âWas she, was she?â she said distractedly as she fiddled with a model on the table beneath her enormous moving picture camera. âWhat do you think?â
The model was of a woodland scene. She was putting the finishing touches to a lifelike figure of a mouse. Lifelike, that is, apart from the fact that it was standing on its hind legs and wearing a waistcoat.
âIt looks adorable, my lady. I love his little cane.â
âHeâs Town Mouse. Heâs visiting his friend in the country.â
âHeâs quite the dandy,â I said.
âHeâs a fiddly little beggar is what he is,â she said. âI think itâll be worth it, though.â
âOne photograph at a time, did you say?â
âOne blessed frame at a time,â she confirmed. âI think I have about forty-three secondsâ worth now. Letâs hope nothing happens to the camera, eh.â She touched the tripod affectionately.
âThis âanimationâ is quite the thing, is it?â I asked.
âNo,â she said. âIn fact Iâm not sure itâll catch on at all. Monsieur Méliès has made some marvellous films but heâs a genius and Iâm just an old dabbler. Still, it keeps the natives gossiping. Iâd rather they were talking about âthat strange lady and her moving picturesâ than âthat dangerous lady and her spying shenanigansâ.â
âNothing wrong with a bit of dabbling, my lady,â I said as she shooed me out of the way and clicked the button on the camera. âThe Empire was built by dabblers. And by spying shenanigans, come to that. Youâre aââ
I was cut short by a distant clap of thunder.
âBother!â she said as the skies began to darken. âThere goes my light. Help me pack up, would you, dear. I may as well retire to the study if thereâs going to be a storm.â
